ESL (English as a Second Language)

In collaboration with Wilbur Wright Community College, Northwest Community Church, and St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Onward Neighborhood House offers computerized levels 1-5 English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults.  Both morning and evening classes are available. Wright Community College provides the instructors and the curriculum while Onward Neighborhood House, Northwest Community Church, and St. Peter’s United Church of Christ recruit students. Registration and testing are done onsite at Onward Neighborhood House.

Based on proficiency testing, participants are assigned to one of 5 levels offered, and placed at one of the instruction sites. All three sites are in close proximity to each other.

Once students complete their ESL classes, they can continue their studies, pursue a degree, retrain for a new profession, or simply navigate through their daily lives with greater ease. They are enabled to speak to their doctors, sales clerks, and children’s teachers with greater confidence.

GED Class (not currently offered)

Passing the GED (General Education Development) test gives those who did not complete high school, or who do not meet requirements for a high school diploma, the opportunity to earn a Certificate of High School Equivalency. In collaboration with Wilbur Wright Community College, this class is offered in the evenings in both English and Spanish.
