From Colombia to Belmont Cragin: Rosa Chaves’ Journey of Hope and Opportunity at Onward House

When Rosa Chavez and her family arrived in Chicago two years ago from Colombia, they were eager to build a better future. With few resources and no family nearby, Rosa faced the daunting challenge of settling into a new country while providing for her husband and children. But thanks to the support of Onward Neighborhood House, Rosa has not only found stability but also a sense of empowerment and pride in her achievements.

Rosa’s introduction to Onward House came through her children’s school, Schubert Elementary, which referred her to the food pantry. At the time, she didn’t know such resources existed. “In my country, we don’t have this kind of service for the community,” Rosa shared. Now, she receives food every week, ensuring her family has the nourishment they need.

But Onward House didn’t stop at providing food. The organization helped Rosa enroll her children in the daycare program and connected her to the furniture bank, providing essential items for her apartment. Through the Illinois Welcoming Center (IWC), Rosa accessed public benefits for her children, including All Kids insurance, and received $5,000 in COVID recovery funds. This financial support allowed her family to pay off overdue rent and bills, providing a much-needed sense of relief.

Rosa also took advantage of the educational opportunities at Onward House. The IWC referred her to a computer class, where she studied for a year under the guidance of Professor Juan. “Thank you, Professor Juan, for your motivating words and patience with students,” Rosa said. The skills she gained not only helped her assist her children with technology but also gave her a newfound confidence in her abilities.

Having completed only elementary school in her native Colombia, Rosa saw her graduation from the computer class as a significant personal milestone. “I remember when I received my diploma, I sent pictures to my parents, and they felt very proud of me,” Rosa said. “I hung up my diploma in my house. Every time I pass by it, I feel proud of what I accomplished.”

The support of Onward House extended beyond essential services and education. Rosa cherishes the sense of joy and community her family experienced at the Onward House Christmas party. “Thank you, Onward House, for the amazing Christmas party offered to the community. My children and I will always cherish this memory. I will never forget their beautiful smiles when they opened their gifts. I never bought gifts for them in my country because I had low income,” she shared.

Today, Rosa reflects on her journey with gratitude and pride. “Thank you, Onward House, for empowering me. You gave me the opportunity to demonstrate that I can do it,” she said.

Rosa’s story is a testament to the transformative impact of Onward Neighborhood House. By providing resources, education, and moments of joy, Onward House helps families like Rosa’s thrive in their new community.
