Norma Sánchez: "Onward House opened doors for me when I felt every other door had closed."

Originally from Taxco Guerrero, Mexico, Norma learned about Onward Neighborhood House through a family member during one of the most difficult chapters her life. After immigrating to the United States in search of a better future, Norma suddenly found herself raising her
children alone. There were nights when the family slept in their car, and every day was a struggle to provide safety and stability. Having experienced abandonment herself as a child, Norma was determined that her own children would always know they were loved and never gave up hope.

“No matter how difficult life became, I was going to keep fighting for them.”

When she came to Onward House, she found more than assistance: she found a community that welcomed her with compassion. Her children discovered a safe place to learn and grow, while Norma found the support she needed to begin rebuilding her family’s future.

One moment stands out above all others. After experiencing significant trauma, Norma’s daughter had become withdrawn and rarely spoke. Despite seeking outside help, little changed. Then one afternoon, her Onward House teacher, Ms. Nancy, shared exciting news. As Norma arrived for pickup, her daughter confidently looked at her and said, “pink.” It was a single word, but to Norma it was a turning point. “To some people, that may sound like a small moment, but to me, it meant everything. I cried because I felt hope returning to our lives.”

Today, all of Norma’s children are thriving. Her youngest son now excels in Onward House’s BlueBirds classroom, and all of her children are happy, doing well in school, and surrounded by caring adults who believe in them.

Onward House also stood beside Norma through some of her family’s hardest moments,
providing food, encouragement, and a place where they always felt welcome. What began as a search for help became the foundation for a brighter future.

Now, Norma proudly shares her story with other families, hoping they will find the same care and opportunity that transformed her own.
